Sept. 8th Lake James Bass Report

10 09 2009

water temp 79 – air temp 75 – rain and cloudy w/ sever thunderstorms

Fished points and docks on main channel in the SW portion of the lake. Fishing was slow with full moon. We managed 5 bass all caught on dark blue spinner baits. Fish were relating to docks and cover in 25 foot of water.

Pattern: When nastiest storm rolls in switch to largest spinnerbait in the box and find the edge of large flats adjacent to the main channel. Large deep dwelling bass will slip up under these conditions to feed. The bait needs to be reeled fairly fast just under the turbid waves to create distortion. Darker hues work best in low light conditions. WATCH OUT FOR LIGHTING

Lake James Sept. 1 Fishing Feport

4 09 2009

water temp: 81 / wind: 10-15 kts / 75 degrees

Started around 9:00 am. Tried topwater frog and shakey head in State park area of lake for a short while with no bites. Went walleye fishing and jigged 15 or more small walleye in 45-55 foot of water on the East side of 126 bridge. No real keepes with the biggest being 14 inches or so. Bait was present and all fish came on spoons and blade baits. One fish spit up 2 inch silver minnows so I tried trolling 4 inch Rouges deep to try to coax a bigger fish, no takers.

Off-Shore fishing reports for Cape Lookout.

King fishing and inshore is hit or miss. Big ten producing some king and dolphin. One day good the next terrible. As for off-shore anywhere from 35 to 50 fathoms are producing good wahoo and sailfish bites. SW of 90 foot drop on up to triple digits off Hatters. Look for temp changes, bait, rips and grass. Lots of wahoo so beef up the leaders. 200 pound floro and 20 foot leaders is the best choice for these fish. You still might get cut off. Downrods produce good wahoo action as well. 100-200 fathom bite is slow with the hotwater. Further out the better when targeting bill fish. Might run into a few tuna out over 200 fathoms.

Red Drum reports for Cape Lookout and Atlantic Beach NC. (Sept.25-Aug17)

Drum bite is stronge in the evenings down towards the Emerald Isle Bridge in the oyster rock and grass. Look for Drum tailing chasing bait. Been doing well on dead and live bait rigged on carolina rigs. Fish close to points and channels. Live 3 inch shad and mud minnows work best. For artificial try Flukes, finesse lures and Top Dogs. The walk the dog action can be deadly when feeding activity is strong. Also try rips along Bear island and Shackleford Banks. White finesse lures rigged with 1/4 or 1/2 oz swimming in the breakers and rips will produce the larger reds.

July 11th Lake Hartwell Stiped Bass

28 07 2009

Water Temp: 84 / Stable weather / SE wind 10-15

Fished down by Dam hitting points and humps. Did alot of looking trying to find bait. Finally found good bait at end of point 2 miles from dam. Downlined bluebacks in 25-35 feet. Managed 6 with 2 at 10 pounds. All came from downlines. The fish will be getting deeper and deeper as the summer goes on. Start looking for the stripers in 40 -70 feet as the water warms. If bait is found in these depth it is always a good idea to give it a try.
