April 26 Hartwell Striped Fishing Report (need some fish)

25 04 2010

Clear / windy / cooler / water temp 67 / storms over night

Went striper fishing with wife on Sunday for about 2 hours. Bought Bluebacks ; tied on light line and headed to the points. Starting marking fish immediately. Caught 10 or so striper and 6-7 spots and largemouth. Most fish including stripers came from down rods in about 25 foot of water on edge of drops. Had fun with it especially after yesterday.

Hartwell Striped Bass

Happy Fishing

Marked allot of fish but no real bait on the points. Bass had moved to the points after yesterday and were feeding well. Managed several between 2-3 pounds. Jigged on 3 and 1/2 pounder on jigging spoon in 30 foot after marking strong arcs on bottom. Found a good bite and my wife had a good time with it….

Book a trip today before the bad weather comes again.

Phil Shope Fishing Tournament Fishing Report

25 04 2010

RAINY / 20-35 KTS WIND / RAINY / water temp 68 degrees / Cloudy / sever front moving in..

Fish seemed to be aggressive for the first hour of light then quite. Caught a few early on a floating worm and a Sammy near points and drop-offs. Turned and focused on the back of creek. Fished them fairly hard for 2-3 hours with little to show. One bass at 3.00 lbs my partner caught about said it all. Went looking.. Not on points, creek channels, or humps. Figured they had to be near the backs. (The first available deep water or funneling along the channels. Managed a few more on docks about 1/2 way in creeks on shaky heads and green jigs with large slow falling trailers. Managed about 6 fish and maybe 8-9 pounds worth. Was not our day, nothing seemed to work. Imagine someone loaded up with it being this time of year.

Lake Hartwell Bite ; Fishing Report for April 25th

25 04 2010

Sunny / 80 degrees / light wind / Severe Front approaching / water temp 70

Fished down towards dam to find cooler water. Found fish relating heavily to the back of reedy creeks. Looked for deep short creeks near the river channel. Fish were positioned in the dead reeds and were taking a floating speed worm very aggressively. Saw several crashing bluegill. Fish are very spread out towards the back half of creeks. Caught several on a spinner-bait around secondary points. Managed 20 or so with heaviest at about 3 pounds.

Tip:
The bass wil be protecting the beds for up to another month. Brim and Bluegill patters work well for they are famous for stealing eggs. Swiming a jig or spinnerbait in green with orange strands are our lures of choice. The Brim will be bedding very soon. When this happens most fishermen leave the beds. Come back and fish the Brim beds because bass will be cruising them searching for an easy meal.

April 17 & 19 Hartwell Lake Guide Striper Report by Up-Close Outfitters

20 04 2010

15-20 kts wind / sunny / 75 degrees and a bit cooler on the 19th / water temp 68

Fish are finally making their way out of the rivers back onto the main lake. With water temp. inching towards the 70 degree the fish are starting to bunch up again. Caught all our fish between the dam and portsman marina dragging bb on main lake points and secondary coves. Fish are still a bit scattered but by moving around and watching the graph you will eventually find the fish. Top-water action is just around the corner. On cloudy cloudy days fish zara spooks and red-fins in darker hues of shad patterns. Our largest fish was around 12 pounds with several more in the 10 pound range. Ended up with about 20 fish on the first day and about 10 on the 19th.

Typical Hartwell Striper Fishing

Tip: The lower portion of the Senica and Tug. produce good #s this time of year. Focus on major points and watch the graph. Look anywhere you think shad would be. Small deep cuts around shallow reefs are what produced this past week. When fishing points we use 6 pound test on med. action rods with small circle hooks, given there are no trees in area. This allows the Blue Backs to swim naturally and always provides a great first run!

April-14-2010 ” Our Guide gets a chance at a Pisgah Gobbler “

14 04 2010

sunny – small cold front moved in overnight – high 73

Why hunt the National Forest? I will tell you… There is nothing better than hiking for two hours to get to turkeys that don’t see hunters, calling in a big woods Gobbler to 16 yards for 2 hours and 15 minutes, then tagging quality three year old Toms.

Up-Close Outfitters is the only Federally Permitted guide business in the Pisgah National Forest. We know of over 20 flocks so we can hunt a new one every time we go into the woods. This morning I had a day to hunt myself so went to my furtherst spot. At 5 1/2 miles to this Gobbler, he new his environment and was smart. It took over two hours to convince this one after hagging up for 1 hour and 1/2. I blew every play in the book. Soft yelps mixed with clucking, purring and clucking, lost yelps, and even burned him up , finally convincing him in.

National Forest Gobbler Taken by Guide Frank Askew

Nothing is More Challenging then Taking a Big Woods Turkey

Tip: When cold fronts move in slow down and cover less ground and take your time. Gobblers won’t gobble as much after a cold front. Stick to areas you think they should be. When hunting roads or logging roads it is a good idea to get off the road and walk up hollows and side ridges to locate a Tom.

Come try a national forest trip around Asheville NC and it will be your proudest Turkey to date….

Keep them in your sights,

Water temp 59 and all were in the shade. Went through 4 jigs before it was said and done…. Most were relating to small points and the back of coves. No fish up river or on points. NC Turkey Hunting Guide in Pisgah National Forest (4-12-2010)

12 04 2010

Weather stable / calm wind / low 70s by 1:00

Hunted the Pisgah near Bravard with new client Larry out of Hendersonville NC. Went in early. Located one on the roust, made a fly down immitation and several calling sequences to tag Larry’s first turkey. Took about 35 – 40 minutes. On the way back we located another group of gobblers. Larry agreed to let me try for one. We sat down and gave it a try. Three gobblers came strait in. They hung up about 60-80 yards down the hallow from us. By using soft yelps, clucking and purring we managed to finally get their interest up. In about an hour and 15 minutes they finally commited. All three came in just beautiful in full strut. I picked the biggest one and filled my first NC tag. Days like this is what it is all about.
